Best of Breed

A method[4] where you purchase the best product for each application[1], often from different software providers. The intent is to get the best functionality[2] for each process[5] regardless of where you purchase it. For example, if the HRMS[6] is purchased from one vendor, the recruiting system form another and a performance management system from yet a third vendor. A term used in relation to software products from different vendors. Usually used to describe options at the enterprise level and implies the integration[3] of the best products within a market segment. For example, the best financial system, the best HR system, etc.

Defined Terms
1. application.

A set of software programs designed to achieve a specific task.

2. functionality.

The collective term describing what a system does: That is, the different types of functions a component is expected to perform as part of a business operation, such as create, update, manipulate, report or delete data.

3. integration.

A process concerned with joining different subsystems or components as one large system. In HR, integration allows organizations to combine the various applications relating to the management of their workforce and their core business so they work effectively together for the best results. The term that describes what happens when two applications are able to communicate with each other and exchange information.

4. method.

A description of what happens, or is carried out, by an object in response to a message. It is also referred to as an operation or service.

5. process.

The mechanism through which the data are transformed, manipulated and created into output such as a report, a decision etc. A series of activities that need to be carried out to accomplish some sort of organizational goal. A sequence of events or activities that are triggered by something happening and results in something being achieved.
