Data Cleansing

Also known as data[1] scrubbing, data cleansing is the process[2] of ensuring that a set of data is correct and accurate. During this process, records[3] are checked for accuracy and consistency, and they are either corrected or deleted as necessary.

Defined Terms
1. data.

Numbers, characters, or images in a form which can be assessed by a human or (especially) input into a computer, stored and processed.

2. process.

The mechanism through which the data are transformed, manipulated and created into output such as a report, a decision etc. A series of activities that need to be carried out to accomplish some sort of organizational goal. A sequence of events or activities that are triggered by something happening and results in something being achieved.

3. records.

A collection of data elements or fields pertaining to the same entity (i.e. an employee, job, location, etc.). For example, each employee has a record that contains only his/her information (e.g. name, address, date of birth, etc.) in the record.
