On-Line Transaction Processing [OLTP]

When a user[4] is interacting directly with the application[1]. Each time the user enters information[2] or requests information is considered to be a transaction[3]. Most types of self service are examples of OLTP, like bank ATM’s and enrolling in your benefits online.

Defined Terms
1. application.

A set of software programs designed to achieve a specific task.

2. information.

The by-product of having data in an HR System. Data is gathered and reviewed providing information for decision making.

3. transaction.

A process whereby the exchange of information between a local and remote program achieves a result. The result is achieved only when all operations within the transaction are executed successfully.

4. user.

Any person who uses the business application whether they input data, view information, create or receive reports.
