Program (or Project) Evaluation and Review Technique [PERT]

A method[4] of analyzing the tasks involved in completing a given project[5], the tie needed to complete each task[6] and the minimum time needed to complete the total project. The graphical drawing that is created to perform the analysis is called a PERT Chart. A similar methodology[2], the Critical Path[3] Method (CPM), was developed for project management[1] in the private sector at about the same time.

Defined Terms
1. project management.

The application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.

2. methodology.

A systematic way of doing things. It usually refers to the organized approach taken to project management and the sequential steps that need to be carried out and a description of the project deliverables.

3. Critical Path ( Critical Path )

The sequence or project network with the longest overall duration determining the shortest time possible to complete the project.

4. method.

A description of what happens, or is carried out, by an object in response to a message. It is also referred to as an operation or service.

5. project.

An interrelated set of tasks with a beginning and an end that is bounded by time, resources, costs and desired results.
